Two Cents

I was quite distressed recently when I heard the news that there is once again a new call for us to eliminate the penny from our nation's coinage. The reason, it now costs more than one cent to make each penny. Something like 1.4 cents per coin. Wasteful? Yes. Then as many networks caught onto the story, inevitably almost every station in the nation did the man-on-the-street interviews on what people think about the penny. Some would even put a penny on the ground and secretly tape people as they walked by it. So, the conclusion is that we don't pick up pennies anymore. I don't think this is necessarily true. I still bend over to pick up a penny, unless it's got something funky on it. I was taught to respect our money...plus I know that pennies add up. Yeah it's a pain to roll them up and kind of embarrassing to walk into the bank, but you don't feel embarrassed taking that cash to McDonald's for your supper. I kept thining about it...and realized people still pick up pennies even if they don't admit to it. Think about your last trip to the gas station. Did you choose the station across the street or across town because it was a penny cheaper? Or did you complain when the price of milk went up two cents? See we still pick up pennies. So US Government...get in gear and find a way to make our money worth more...or find a cheaper way to make the penny so I can stop hearing people complain about it. They already took away Pluto as a planet...don't take away my penny. (Now if you want to talk about waste...England has us beat there with the beautiful, yet worthless two pence).
